Job Description


We are seeking a public Policy Intern to work with the Executive Director to respond to current and emerging threats to the press freedom, and related human rights issues.

The Public Policy Intern will contributing through team meetings, writing policy briefs and position papers, blogging, editing reports, compiling data, preparing advocacy materials for internal and external use, and assisting in the development and execution of Fourth Estate's communications, programs and initiatives.


Successful applicants will be bright, highly motivated individuals with strong academic records and an interest and aptitude for public policy, political communication, freedom of the press, public information, and human rights.

The Public Policy Intern will be actively involved in crafting Fourth Estate's message, and as such, must be self-starters with proven research and analytical skills, strong writing and editing abilities, the capacity to multitask in a fast-paced environment, and a passion for news, press freedoms, political participation, and human rights issues.

  • Knowledge and interest in news, journalism, freedom of information and human rights issues
  • Strong academic record
  • Outgoing, creative and enthusiastic
  • Proven interest in digital freedom, public organizing and campaigning
  • Proven research, analytical, writing and editing abilities.
  • Student or recent graduate in international relations, journalism, communications or similar field
  • Fluency in English is required. French, German, Spanish or other European languages is a plus

Time Commitment:

  • We are flexible on term, but prefer a candidate who is available to work for at least 5 months
  • We prefer a minimum of 16-20 hours per week
  • Internship carries a $500/month stipend


This position reports to our Washington, DC office, however since most of our work is conducted remotely/virtually, applicants will be considered from locations worldwide.
