Job Description

The Fourth Estate Public Benefit Corporation is looking for a consulting managing editor to work with our Executive Director to help create a new and unique type of news outlet -- Awesome Journalism.

We need someone with a impeccable news sense, strong organizational skills, vision and the ability to help lead and educate the trustees of Awesome Journalism chapters.  You will be central to help craft the voice of Awesome Journalism and are expected to be a leader in the space.

This is a very part time position to start.

What You'll be Doing:

  • As an associate managing editor, you will shape the voice of Awesome Journalism and lead a growing set of independent Awesome Journalism chapters.
  • You 'be responsible for setting and evangelizing journalistic standards and set editorial expectations
  • Work with the Executive Director to develop and manage a network of Awesome Journalism Chapters
  • Consult with chapters on story submissions and coordinate with chapter heads,  trustees, and project owners
  • Work closely with with other teams to support editorial requests and overall business goals
  • Work closely with technical team, to push the bar of technology driven innovations from long form interactive storytelling to branded content and unit opportunities
  • Oversee larger site initiatives such as editorial packages, analytics and audience strategy, schedules and calendar planning, and brand positioning
  • Create a culture that nurtures and rewards strong journalism that is aligned with our Core Journalistic Standards
  • Other editorial and journalistic duties in support of Awesome Journalism

Who You Are:

  • Demonstrated background in identifying and building relationships with freelances and contributors
  • Ability to coordinate multiple contributors and keep them on-task.
  • Reader-focused mindset (makes decisions based on reader’s needs and wants).
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Attention to detail and deadline-driven
  • Reliable and efficient.
  • BA or BS in related field
  • Exceptional ability in copywriting and editing
  • Preference for background and experience in higher education
  • Mastery of journalistic ethics and standards
  • Aligned with Fourth Estate's mission and vision
  • Fluency in English is required. French, German, Spanish or other European languages is a real plus
