Job Description

The Fourth Estate Public Benefit Corporation is an exciting news and journalism organization on a mission to democratizing news.  To help support our mission and programs we are looking for a RUBY engineer who would embrace the opportunity to take a leadership role with our fast growing organization.

The position requires a professional who is adept at coming up with solutions when problems arise, bootstrapping solutions, is a fantastic communicator, is team-oriented, and understands how to work in a dynamic and entrepreneurial environment.

This is a long-term role with full time potential. Contract to start.


  • Design, develop, modify, and implement scale-able, robust applications
  • Advise on any technical issues and drive resolutions/solutions
  • Coordinate/lead code reviews while implementing high standards
  • Manage changes to project scope, proactively identify issues, and develop alternative solutions
  • Evaluate, research, recommend, and implement new technologies to ensure applications remain current


  • Significant experience in software development
  • 3+ years of experience as a Full Stack Ruby Developer
  • Strong experience in an Agile development environment
  • Contributor to at least one Ruby Open Source project
  • Hands on experience in JavaScript, jQuery, HTML, HTML5, CSS, AngularJS, Bootstrap
  • Experience writing clean, efficient and well-engineered front-end code
  • Knowledge in Mean Stack - Express.js, AngularJS (or Angular), and Node.js
  • Experience in creating reusable, scalable code
  • Experience in building web applications using modern frameworks like React or Angular
  • Experience in integrating front-end code with back-end technologies and 3rd party  APIs
  • Hands on experience in developing dynamic web applications based on REST APIs
  • Good to have exposure to React Native (For M Mobile Apps), D3.js (Charts/Reports)
  • Hands on experience in Responsive Web Development
  • Experience working in cross-functional, highly collaborative Agile teams.
  • News and journalism experience is a plus, but not required
